Oberammergau had managed to keep the plague at bay by maintaining a constant vigil and controlling the movement of strangers in and out of the village. That was until a villager, who had been living away, stole back under the cover of darkness. Within months some 84 villagers had died. The whole village met and members of the church council made a solemn vow before the altar that they would perform, every 10th year, a Play of the Saviour’s bitter suffering and death if God would deliver them from the disease. From that day, it was recorded, that there were no more deaths. For hundreds of years, in spite of dangers and threats, Oberammergau kept true to the solemn promise.
This Passion Play in Bavaria is the most famous and renowned of all the Passion Plays. The cast for this Passion Play is always made up from local villagers.
